John Yap is a consultant cardiac surgeon who works in the NHS at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. He specialises in the surgical treatment of Valvular heart disease, Coronary artery bypass grafting, Mitral repair, Marfan syndrome, Valve sparing operation and diseases of the Thoracic Aorta (including aortic dissection and aneurysms). He has a special interest in surgical and hybrid treatment of AF including the Maze operation, Convergent and left atrial appendage closure (open and keyhole). He is an educator in the Convergent AF ablation procedure.


Mr. Yap completed his medical degree at Glasgow University and went on to specialize in general surgery, obtaining a fellowship FRCS(Glasg) with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow, in 1992. He further specialised in cardiothoracic surgery (FRCS(CTh) at Royal Brompton, London Chest and St Bartholomew’s Hospital. He also undertook a research fellowship at Mayo Clinic, USA, where he was awarded Doctorate degree for his research into gene therapy. He has published widely in peer reviewed journals and has presented at local, national, and international meetings.
